THE FEAR OF LIVING ONE’S TRUTH

Soukaina Alaoui

I was born in a small village in South East Morocco. Most of my schooling was done in that little town before I moved out to the capital at 18. My early childhood was filled with many hobbies. I liked drawing and painting. I played in Theatre since I was six years old, and I took an interest in martial arts as well.

After moving to Rabat at age 18, I joined the School of Governance and Economy to do a bachelor’s in Political Science, International Relations and Economics. My second year in that school coincided with the Arab Spring and the constitutional referendum that took place in Morocco as a result, so I got to participate closely in the events of my country transitioning to a constitutional monarchy.

However, it was exactly participating in those events that made me change my curriculum. I abandoned politics and went for a Bachelor of Computer Science. I also relocated from the capital to a peaceful two in the Atlassian mountains. There I took an interest in teaching and became a Tutor and started exploring my interest in Asian cultures (mainly Japanese and Korean) by working on cultural events inside and outside of my campus. I took an interest in AI my junior year, so I chose to go that path for my senior year, and later partially on my masters.

After graduating, I enrolled in an MBA and went on my first exchange to Finland. That exchange journey awoke in me my passion for traveling and discovering the world, so when I enrolled in my second Masters in Color Science and Machine Vision, I chose a program that would allow me to live in different countries and travel around. So, by the end of it, I lived in France, Spain and Finland, and travelled to many others.

Then I took my first full-time job as a software engineer right after graduation, and my life trajectory would be so that I will move to Germany 2 years later and attempt to build my own business in a different field than what I pursued before.

What can we expect from the talk?

An honest, vulnerable and fun exchange about the fears that surround us as we go through life, what they really tell us and how we can work with them in our journey of living a fulfilling life.

Why do you want to be a TEDx Speaker?

I hope for what I have to say to help, encourage or benefit someone else, and TEDx seems like a great platform to spread a message.

Do you have an important message to spread or a motivational life motto?

Don’t know if it’s a life motto but: Don’t take chances away from yourself that you wouldn’t take away from a loved one.
